Room 5 and 6's Cotton Ball Catapult Contest!

This week we are not doing Maths Interchange as usual, since the choir is going to Adelaide. Miss McLeod and Mrs McGuinniety assigned a task to create a self-standing catapult, to fire cotton balls in the air.

The supplies we used were rubber bands, Popsicle sticks, paper clips, cotton balls, glue, sticky tape, rocks, ice cream containers, wire and boxes. The class was put into pairs (each a different year level and gender) and then we began working. Each pair had to create two prototypes on paper, then begin building their best/favourite. It took us about 2 - 3 for everyone to finish their catapults. Everyone was definitely impressed with each others's catapults! The best part was that all of the designs were different.

But that's not it. Mrs McGuinniety, Miss McLeod, Isaac and Gary organised a competition to test the height and distance of the cotton balls. They hung a piece of string from one of the wires on the roof to the ground, and about 1.5 metres up a picture of the teachers - in their Minion outfits from last term! That measures the height of the cotton balls.

On the green screen there is once again, a picture of the Minions, with red vivid marks to make it look like a vivid. About 1 metre back from the screen we will fire our cotton balls. If you hit the bulls eye you get $50 for our money system. That will test the distance.

Head to everyone's individual blogs to see each of their catapults being launched.
Here is our school Principal Mr. M launching some fireballs with one of the catapults!
